./12. Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall 24Nov2000

Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall -- 24 November 2000

Fenny and I decided to do another day of tourism. There was a bookstore on the lower East side that she wanted to visit, and it was close to this touristy spot, so we stopped by there on the way.

There was this cool reflective wall with Chinese writings in it!

Oh, look! There's a building here, too! And statues!

But forget all that. There's this cool, reflective wall!

Fenny said she liked this part of the wall, so we could take our picture in front of it. I asked her what the writing said, and she said something that, at the time, made me think: "Oh, yeh, that would be something she'd be turned on by." But I can't remember what it was.

Here are a few pictures of the building itself. Various compositions and exposures. I wasn't using the LED, so it was more experimental than anything.

A little flowergarden-like thing. I like the second exposure better.

More pictures of the hall. Various compositions and exposures. Sometimes a little wrong, like the first picture.

There were some guys building a set of some sort. There was sound equipment. Probably a play was gonna be put on in the next couple of days.

Some avante-garde performance art by Fenny, sandwiched by two mood shots. At the bottom, a picture of ladies with coloured umbrellas. As they got closer the one with the yellow umbrella folded hers up, so I didn't get any closer photos.

What did we come here to see? Oh, yeh, the SYSMHall.

We snuck into this little area that looked like it was off-limits for tourists to get our picture. We were probably photographed and archived in some little bureacratic office in Taipei. Evidence to be used against us in the JFK assassination.

SYSMHall compositions. Getting closer, closer...

The changing of the guard is a big tourist thing to check out. We just happened to be there right before the hour, so we got in on it. These guys do everything super-slow and deliberate-like.

The two guys standing on pedestals, for about five minutes before the hour, do this slow-motion routine with their guns. They almost don't look real.

Then, on the hour, those other three guys march in (super-slow). Then the guys on pedestals and the guys that came in face each other in various pairings to examine each others' uniforms, technique, etc. Salutations all around.

Finally, the two old guys march off and the two new guys get up on the pedestals. They have a pretty wierd technique for getting onto the pedestals, but the wierdness probably wouldn't translate to words.

Then, the two new guys spend about five minutes doing some elaborate gun-spinning and throwing routine. They'll stand perfectly still for 30-45 seconds at a time, then suddenly go into fits of motion, then stand still again. This makes all the junior-high aged kids very giddy.

Finally, the action is over. The tourists leave, and the devoted few (like me) go up to the balconies to capture the solitude on film. Now these guys will stand perfectly still for about 45 minutes until the five-minute-to-the-hour mark comes, when they start their slow motion routine.

Some large, unwieldy musical instrument, probably played by SYS himself. Who knows. The wierd framing is because on the left was some ugly desk with rags on it, and on the right was this ugly janitor's stepstool with rags, too. So I had to just get the middle part. Sorry.

Not only is it a solitary job, but Fenny says high-school-aged girls don't fantasise about military guys in Taiwan, either. So these guys basically have all the disadvantages of a military job, with none of the mystique.

What a rough life.

Outside the park, at the lake which, in the pictures, is full of water but, in real life, is mostly full of small puddles.

No tourist spot would be complete without a little coffee shop for the trendy sorts to spend their money.

A little statue of a boy reading. Not much to say here.
